WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS
AND ACNE?

Blackheads, or Whiteheads are a type of Acne.

Acne is a hereditary condition brought on by hormonal changes to our bodies that cause the oil glands within our skin pours to secrete excessive oil.

Excessive oil (sebum), along with dead skin cells, bind together to create a blockage in the pore.

As a result of the blockage the pour becomes  irritated.   Affected by the irritation, the pore becomes swollen, and inflamed.

Here’s more detail on how Acne occurs:

Our skin works constantly to renew itself. Our sebaceous glands produce sebum, the oil that keeps the skin moist and pliable.   As our skin renews itself, older skin cells die and slough off.

When skin cells are shed by our body unevenly, they tend to clump together with sebum (natural skin oil) to form a plug.

This plug (blockage) starts to occur one to three weeks before it appears just below or on the skin's surface.

The acne process starts deep inside the sebaceous hair follicles, which are the tiny opening we commonly call pores.

Blackheads or whiteheads a type of Acne,   typically appear on our bodies,  on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders,  which are the areas of our skin where  the largest number of our bodies functional oil glands reside.

Typical Acne Lesions Are Comedones, Nodules, Papules, Pustules, And Inflammatory Cysts

Non-inflamed 'sebaceous cysts' are called epidermoid cysts, although not a constant, they can occur either in alignment with acne or alone.

* Whiteheads - These are smaller pimples or bumps that stay just under the surface of the skin.

* Blackheads - These dark pimples or zits as they may commonly be referred to.. rise directly to the skin's surface.

* Papules - Are often pinkish appearing bumps

* Pustules - These type of pimples are often red at the bottom and have pus filled heads on top.

* Nodules - These are large, often painful, solid boil -like pimples  embedded deep in the skin. This type of acne signal levels of inflammation or infection deep inside of the hair follicles

* Cysts - Painful, pus-filled pimples that lay in the skin.. These are thick masses (lumps) that form beneath the surface of the skin, which are created by the buildup of secretions near the roots within hair follicles,  can easily cause scarring.

First of all, I want to thank you for all your advice and help that has helped me get control of my Acne. I suffered for over 15 years, and have gone to dermatologists before, but none of them ever helped me, and one even made me worse than before.

Your suggestion of topical antibiotic combined with continued use of the tretinoin and the ortho-tri-cyclen birth control was the very solution.

I'll tell you what really helped me most -- was the fact that I was so humiliated and depressed over my Acne problem that I couldn't bring myself to go to a doctor's office for that critical analysis and initial information.

When I found your site, I saw a way for me to get detailed information and help in an anonymous and non-threatening way. I'm also very impressed with the fact that you keep up with the latest on professional, dermatological skin care; you seem to keep yourselves up to date and that is so important in cases like mine where nothing before has ever helped.

There have been so many advances in the understanding and treatment of Acne, and until I used your online services, I had no idea about them.
